Locum doctor is a doctor who works in the place of the regular doctor when that doctor is absent, or when a hospital/practice is short-staffed. These professionals are still governed by their respective regulatory bodies, despite the transient nature of their positions.

First steps to become a locum doctor
If you want to be a locum doctor in Ireland or the UK your first task would be to register with the irish medical council or if you want to work in the UK then register with the UK general medical council.
After IMC / GMC certificates you will also need some form of police check. For irish locums doctors you will need a Garda Vetting Certificate, while UK locum doctors need a Police Clearance Certificate.
If you are not a EU national, you will need the appropiate Work Permit
You will also need a good locum CV, which you can then take to the locum agencies that suit you.
